Dangerous Behavior Revised Edition eBook Walter Marks

I enjoyed the book right up to the ending.....and it went from 4 stars to 2. The ending is the start of the next book In a series.
The plot is a big tease. Did Victor kill the woman or not. I guess he did but I don't care any more.

Dangerous Behavior Revised Edition eBook Walter Marks Reviews

Dangerous Behavior has a fun plot that keeps you guessing to the end. The main character has an interesting perspective and helps you become fully immersed in his world. His world of psychiatry and NY prisons was presented in an interesting way. For me, there was some annoying distractions, like the mc/author's seeming obsession with women's breasts which seemed to be the only part of the women that was interesting to the men, and that perspective got a bit tedious. It also seemed a bit sophomoric and unfortunately cheapens what would otherwise be very good writing. If one can overlook that, the plot keeps you engaged and the pages keep turning as you are driven to discover 'who done it?'.
Victor Jenko is in prison for murdering a woman in front of her young daughter. Although Jenko has no memory of committing the crime, he's serving time in prison. David is a new psychologist in the prison, working closely under Ben, his boss. Ben gives David the assignment of determining if Jenko is dangerous if released, since he needs to make a recommendation to the parole board. Rather than rely on a computer, David insists on meeting Jenko. After his first meeting, he's not convinced the man is guilty. David spends his spare time researching Jenko's case to find the truth.

This novel has a good plot and good characters, but it tended to drag at times. The author included a lot of scenes (such as David's romance, his past failure with a patient, etc.) that slowed the action. Who cares that David is on the pudgy side and needs to shed a few pounds? Who cares which restaurant he chose and what their specialty is? A good editor would help this novel flow.
When I began reading Dangerous Behavior, I became interested in the story. I was curious about the doctor, why he wanted to work in a prison, and who Melissa was. The patient seemed innocuous, I couldn't help but try to predict his innocence or guilt. It began as a real page turner.
As the story continued, I began to feel repulsed by the doctor. Every woman he met was subjected to his silent evaluation of her looks and sexuality. Each woman to whom he was attracted seduced him in ways where he was powerless to not respond. It was reminiscent of the way rapists blame the victim for being to sexual. I continued reading because I wanted to know the ending.
The story only continued making every man in it seem like women were invented for his pleasure. The doctor, upon catching a glimpse of a woman's breast, thinks, "My treat". When a group of mothers with their children are protesting the possible release of a man who killed a woman in front of her child, the guard at the gate makes a jerking off sign. The doctor laughs. Another guard remarks about a visitor, "She would make your pants tent" and the doctor agrees. I still kept reading hoping for some redemption and to find out who was responsible for the murder.
Unfortunately, I could not finish what promised to be an interesting thriller because the author's love of good breasts, mentioned numerous times throughout the story, became just
too insulting, rude, and added to the objectification of women.
I am sure there will be men, and some women, who will find these references funny or typical but to me they are only offensive.
Dr. David Rothberg is a psychiatrist who comes to work in a prison of dangerous and "insane" inmates. His first assignment is to assess the violence "risk factor" of a prisoner who is about to be considered for parole. He is shocked to learn that the man, Janko, has been incarcerated for 15 years but has never been treated at all for his mental problems. Janko was found guilty (but really "not guilty by reason of insanity") of murdering a young woman while her 2 year old daughter looked on.

As David gets to know Janko, he begins to doubt if he ever committed the murder. This leads Rothberg to take on the role of private investigator as he tries to piece together what actually happened 15 years ago.

I enjoyed the mystery of the book very much. It was intriguing to consider Did Janko do it - or not? The evidence sways back and forth...

If I had to give a criticism, I would say that there are too many side distractions, such as David's love life, his care of a turtle, the long details of dinner menus at restaurants, his tendency to ignore migraine triggers, etc. Some of the story was a bit over the top--such as David's convoluted plan to get a sample of a bouncer's DNA. And when the bouncer attacks him, the man is quickly arrested, tried, and incarcerated by the next day, it seems. Fast justice for him, but not so fast getting justice on other fronts.

But still, this was a good read that kept me interested, and I'd recommend it to others.
This book started off with great writing, keeps the reader interested until it starts degrading in the middle. Story line could have been improved by developing main character more. But really what made this book disappointing was a literally disgusting ending. Made me wish I had never wasted time reading it.
2stars.
The psychological aspect of the story was presented with very little information which left the ending of the story with very little reader impact. The ending was nicely conceptualized and presented but nothing to really tie it up with the whole story except "nothing learned." It might have been nicer if the tie up was more on the psychological profile rather than just being a simple criminal mind. The minimal psychological information has also robbed the thrill from the story. The wedding scene and it's aftermath could have given the reader tons of thrill but was not quite encouraging. Perhaps, commercial factors did play a good part in the presentation. There were also a few grammatical and spelling concerns that should have been addressed.
I enjoyed the book right up to the ending.....and it went from 4 stars to 2. The ending is the start of the next book In a series.
